‘Gongshi (Chinese: 供石), also known as
scholar’s rocks, are naturally occurring or
shaped rocks that are traditionally appreciat-
ed by Chinese scholars. It’s also believed to
possess spirits from nature......’
The forms are done
with the intention which allow movements in
drying and firing. Using the clay memory as
the form shaping process, Allowing the force
of nature to take over the final forming stage.
Instead of fixing the cracking that appeared
during firing, I used the Kintsugi technique to
highlight the ‘imperfections’.
In the past people believed many natural
forms possess spirits, they bring connection
and harmony between people and nature.
‘gongshi’ was one of the popular items to
have in homes.
These sculptural plates are taking inspiration
from the ‘gongshi’
The unique forms are made to bring wonders
and remind us of the deep connection with
nature which we used to have.
